Clinging to the top of one of the last passenger trains across South Dakota, I wondered if I would survive. Of course, I did, as you are reading this. My father broke my ribs and my mother broke my heart. Why did I run away from home? Why did I risk life and limb? Screaming in the night, the wind streaking, soul abandoned, the chase, the howl, the night with the dogs and then the day, the walk down Main Street into the first jail cell of my life, thanks everyone, I feel free at last and my life is down the toilet.
